History of Mother's Day


The earlist of Mother's day celebrations, go back to the Egyptians. They held festivals to honor the goddess of Isis. She was said to be the mother of the Pharaohs.

In the 1600's in England, the celebrations for mothers really began.During Lenten Sunday, the servants and trade workers were allowed to return home to visit family.On this Sunday they were allowed to stop fasting and have a large family feast.

In the United States the first Mother's Day took place at Andrews Methodist church in Graton, West Virginia on May 10, 1908.

The United states congress approved the holiday in 1914. They designated the 2nd Sunday in May.

Now more than 40 countries now celebrate Mother's day, on th 2nd Sunday in May..
